Words that Sparkle - A Shining Endorsement from QBOA

There’s no greater joy than seeing my creations connect with people — and even more so when they’re celebrated on a national stage. I was truly humbled to receive this beautiful message from Alison Summerville, President of the Queensland Boulder Opal Association, (see below) after showcasing my latest Wearable Apparel piece at the 2025 Queen of Gems Jewellery Design Awards and in collaboration with Sunstate Jewellers. What a endorsement, as it comes from an official organization (the Queensland Boulder Opal Association) and includes glowing feedback from event attendees and dignitaries. "Outback Orbit" won Highly Commended.

2025 Queen of Gems Design Awards "Outback Orbit" - Highly Commended

Good morning Sandy

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for entering the 2025 Queen of Gems Jewellery Design Awards Cat3 Wearable Apparel once again.

Your entries are always inspiring and of the highest quality.  Congratulations on your Highly commended award.

Can I pass on some feedback from the 100+ attendees on the awards night,  including David Littleproud MP, as well as comments from the hundreds of visitors to the Waltzing Matilda Centre display.

Both fashion pieces should grace the highest fashion arenas around the world, including our own Melbourne Cup.  Outstanding!

Please keep up the great work inspired by our wonderful gem, the boulder opal, and we look forward to next year’s entry.

With kind regards

Alison Summerville

Concept

Outback Orbit is a sculptural millinery piece inspired by the vast, raw beauty and swirling energy of the Australian outback. Featuring a striking 86.85ct Yowah boulder opal with a chocolate and caramel matrix lit by purple and green flashes, the design captures nature’s rhythm and hidden life beneath the sunbaked earth. Its dramatic orbiting arcs evoke windstorms, spider webs, and celestial movements, while timber accents ground it in the organic spirit of the land. A true celebration of movement, mystery, and Winton’s enduring magic, this piece transforms the outback into an awe-inspiring wearable crown.

Description

This striking millinery sculpture captures the wild elegance of the Australian outback, inspired by a rare 86.85ct Yowah boulder opal. Built on a vibrant purple buntal base with orbiting arcs of millinery wire and iridescent piping, secured with a comb and elastic for effortless wear, Outback Orbit is a celebration of natural geometry and gemstone artistry—a wearable homage to Winton’s ancient spirit, created in proud collaboration with Sunstate Jewellers.
